Hello Again From The French Hen's Nest,
I just got back from a vacation at Emerald Isle, North Carolina, part of the Crystal Coast. I went with my son, his wife, my 6 year old grandson, and my two month old granddaughter. Have to say I enjoyed them so much. We fished and crabbed, and ate a lot of fish and crabs. It was a beautiful week.
While there I visited Beaufort (French pronunciation) the home of my father's ancestors, the Frenches. It's a beautiful little historic town on the water founded in 1709. It was originally a fishing village and today you can still buy seafood fresh off the boats. The famous pirate Blackbeard was a frequent visitor to the town and in 1718 his ship ran aground just off the channel. You can see many of the artifacts from the sunken ship, Queen Ann's Revenge, at the Beaufort Maritime Museum.
I am sharing a few pictures of the town, and a few of the many lovely homes from the 1800's. It is a charming town with excellent restaurants, and of course Southern hospitality.
From Beaufort you can ferry over to Shackleford Island, which has so many shells, beautiful conch shells, and wild horses roam the island. You can also ferry to Sand Dollar Island, and pick up sand dollars, but only sand dollars. I've taken my grandchildren to both islands a few times, and we've always had a great time, and brought back beautiful shells.

I am so glad to see your post as we have been talking about taking a trip to Emerald Isle. I see it's as beautiful as I have heard. Shackleford Island will be a must see and do, I love collecting shells. A great post and now I have some places to make sure I take in. Will show this one to my husband.
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend
Betsy
Hi Betsy, One of the great things about Emerald Isle is you have the sound on one side, and the ocean on the other, and you can access both just by walking across the street. We always stay on the sound side in a house with a pier, because you can fish, crab, and clam. The sound is shallow, and you can walk out 150 ft or more and it's just up to your knees. And of course if you want to swim in the ocean, you just walk across the street. Hope you visit one day, it's a beautiful place, and the weather is awesome, unless there is a hurricane coming.
DeleteThank you so much for the visit.
Jeannie
I sure wish I could've been a mouse in your pocket!
ReplyDeleteWonderful shops!
It is such a beautiful place, one where you look around and are amazed by the creations of God. Great place to share with the family. Thank you so much for stopping by.

It's so beautiful! We have visited before, I loved the revisit!
ReplyDeleteHi Jeannie, I grew up down there, New Bern, which is half and hour from Emerald Isle, and had family in Beaufort. When I was little there wasn't much there. I spent much of my youth there, and love going back, just to smell the ocean, and get my feet wet again. Good memories. Hope you go back again.

Wonderful to be part of you visit. The little blue cottage is my favourite.

Hi Sandra, so happy to have you visiting all the way from South Africa. I'm with you, I love the little blue one and the teal one. They are so charming, today's homes are really lacking that charm. Hope you have a lovely weekend.

Oh Jeannie,
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely blue vacation you had, and you ate crabs too? Lucky you!
Happy Blue Monday!
Hi Sally, we caught so many, and my grandson insisted that I cook them for him. He had such a great time with those crabs. Sally, thank you so much for hosting.

Wonderful photos and what a delightful place to visit ~ thanks, carol, xo
ReplyDeleteHi Carol, I see by your photos that you live on the coast, I really miss living near the ocean, always thought I'd go back, but life just takes over, if you know what I mean. Thank you so much for stopping by.

Great photos! Looks like a great place to go on vacation!
ReplyDeleteThank you Kimberlee, it is a great place to vacation, and there is so much to see and do. Never enough time to do it all. Thank you so much for stopping by.

Good Morning CC, Thank you for stopping by, and hope you do visit soon. It's beautiful this time of year, when most tourists have gone home, I'm ready to go back. Have a great day.

Happy Blue Monday!
What a lovely town and I adored seeing the homes you shared. I would love to visit there one day. I live in Western NC in the mountains so visiting the sea would be fun.
