Chinoiserie Umbrella Stand

Hello again from The French Hens Nest!
Sneak Peek

I bought an umbrella stand one day not sure if I really liked it.  It's red but the decoration is a little modern for me.  I've used it for about a year and every time I see it I am not really sure about it.

It's okay, but not me.

One day while walking around the Museum of History, shop I saw these beautiful napkins and got the idea to decoupage the umbrella stand.

Such pretty detail...

I gave the stand one coat of off white paint so the original detail would not show through the thin layer of the napkin.

I left the top and bottom detail of the stand since it is so pretty.

After separating the layers of napkin, I glued the napkins, one inch at a time, to the stand using Mod Podge.  I was not able to get a perfectly smooth application since the paper was so thin, but I kinda like the texture.  After completely covering the stand with the napkins, I gave it 3 coats of Mod Podge (you know the drill).  Finally I sprayed it with a couple coats of gloss polycrylic.
Here is how it turned out...

Now I have a chinoiserie umbrella stand! I like it much better now.

I would love to know your experiences with decoupage.  Please leave me a comment below...

Warmest wishes from Linda

  10. Hi Linda,
I decoupage with napkins a lot but I usually cut pieces out. its quite hard to get large pieces smooth because as you know you can only brush them so much before they disintegrate! I think you did a great job. It turned out lovely. Thanks so much for joining us again at Transformed Tuesday this week.
