Dress Up Your Lamp Shades

Hello Again From The French Hen's Nest

I was in the guest bedroom one day, and I noticed my antique lamp sitting on my little French nightstand.  I've seen it many times, it has three lights, and white shades on them. And I thought, why are those shades white, why haven't I covered them?  I have some toile material on hand that matches the pillow covers.  What was I waiting for? So, I collected the three shades, the toile, and went downstairs to work.

I rounded up the adhesive spray, my scissors, and found the pattern in the material that I liked.   I just wanted the colors to match the bedding, so the patterns don't match exactly, which is fine.  I then measured the piece of material needed  to cover the shade by rolling the shade in the material and marking it.    Once I did this, I cut the piece of material.  Now time for the spray adhesive, I sprayed the back side of the material, and sprayed a little on the shade.  I then rolled the shade in the piece of cloth, and rubbed it out smoothly.  Once you've done this you have the top, and bottom to contend with.  I cut the excess material off leaving a quarter inch to fold under on the bottom and top.  There are usually two prongs in the shades, and you may have to cut where they are, in order for the finished edges to look neat.

You also have to make sure that the seam where the material meets is straight.  One side can overlap a little.  Well, here they are.

Much better than plain white

Here are some more shades that I covered  using designer gift wrap.  I did these a few years ago, and added  a little trim.   The paper was very easy to work with, and has held up well.  These are on my bedroom chandelier.

I'm sure most of you have done this before, but for those who haven't, I hope this isn't confusing, it is really simple.  So if you have a white shade just sitting around somewhere, give it a try.
