Frenchified Ottoman

Hello again from The French Hens Nest!

I want to share with you how I "Frenchified" my old ottoman.

Here is the before. I bought it about 5 years ago at a thrift store for $12.

I put it in my bedroom for my husband to sit on when he puts on his shoes.

I was looking at one of the French design books Jeannie gave me at Christmas and I saw a little stool with a ruffled cover on it.  It inspired me to make one for my ottoman.  Jeannie also gave me one of two drapery panels she bought from GW made from the most beautiful bee fabric.  The bees are stitched in gold.

I decided my cover would have cording so I first cut strips 2" wide, wrapped the cord and sewed close to the cording with my zipper foot.
You could absolutely make this without cording for a more informal look.

I measured the length and width of the top of the ottoman and cut my fabric that size plus 1 inch for a 1/2 inch seam allowance on all sides.
Then I pinned the cording to the top and sewed them together using my zipper foot.

It helps for things to fit better if you clip the seam allowance around the corners.

Next I cut the skirt 2 1/2 times the entire measurement around the ottoman and ruffled it.  I adjusted the ruffles to fit the top and to look evenly spaced all around.
This part was hard without a ruffler attachment!  I will definitely buy one before tackling ruffles on heavy fabric again.

But here it is!

I love how it turned out!  It looks like it's wearing a fancy new dress! Sorry DH, this stays in the living room!

Please tell me what you think!

Linda

  1. Good Evening Linda, I love how you have changed your stool. The piping which you have added lifts the stool from ordinary to luxury and I have to say, the material with the golden bees is beautiful. Is your husband allowed to sit on the stool now it looks so lovely????? (only teasing). Best Wishes Daphne
