Osage Oranges & Crickets??

Hello Again from The French Hen's Nest

I don't know about you, but I have a real cricket problem about this time of year.  These city crickets are really fast, they sneak right past me.   Then I hear the dreaded chirping, you know the sound, you get up to look for it, you  know you're close because as soon as they hear you they shut up. I always track them down and put them outside, but it's a pain.  So, I went to  a farmer's market a couple of weeks ago, and one vendor was selling Osage Oranges.
I was surprised, because as far as I knew there really wasn't a use for them.  So I asked him in a nice way, why he was selling them.  He said, that if you put them in the place where crickets tend to go (you know where that is) when they come in, the crickets will come out, because they don't like the smell of the Osage Oranges.   Guess that makes them easier to catch.   I like the smell of the oranges myself, it's very green, very fresh, but it's nice to know that crickets don't.

So, with that in mind, I kept my eye out for Osage Orange trees.  While driving home the other day, I noticed there were OO's in the road, so I pulled over as soon as I could.  Most were smashed in the street, but I was able to rescue a few and was happy to have those.

Well, I'm going to stop them before they come in, so I'm thinking they will be pretty around the front door, and maybe head them off at the pass.  So far this is working, I'll let you know how it turns out....   Just thought you'd like to know.

I had  never seen an Osage Orange until I moved to Virginia, thirty years ago,  pretty color, right?

Till next time,
